Kevin Smith

Clerks. Mallrats. Chasing Amy. Dogma. Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back. * Clerks II.

Any of these movies is reason enough to have the man on this list. But for me, it’s something else that makes him the most awesomest.

He allows us in. Way in.

Good or bad, there isn’t much he hides from his loyal fan base. And we love him for it. I know it sounds stalkerish but it’s almost like you have a personal relationship with him instead of just fan and director, he shares himself that much. From his blog (link in the blogroll) to his Podcast with uber-producer Scott Mosier (affectionately dubbed SModcast — look it up in iTunes. Totally worth it.), nothing appears to be off limits and there also seems to be no boundries. He’s a great storyteller as his “Evening With…” DVD’s display – four hours of the funniest and sometimes raunchiest moments (without having naked people onscreen) ever commited to film. They are a great watch.

I appreciate the way he stands for what he believes in and isn’t afraid to put people in their place. I mean, considering all the shit talking that people do about him all over the ‘net, it’s a wonder that he goes online at all but he ventures forth and we’re all the better for it.

I don’t always agree with his point of view and if I had the opportunity to question him one on one, there are some things I would like to ask and the cool thing is I can almost do that – not one on one – but on his viewaskew message board where he posts frequently which adds to the feeling that this guy is reachable at just about all times by just about anyone.

Yeah, I’m going to go there. He seems like he could be your friend (that sound you heard was the restraining order being filed). I don’t say this in the scary, Brocktoon kind of way. I just mean that he’s a talented guy, funny as hell, and probably would give you the shirt off his back if you needed it.

Who wouldn’t want a friend like that?

*I know “Jersey Girl” goes here and the funny thing to do would be to deride it somehow but I never saw it in the theaters, meant to but never got around to it and when I finally did see it, it was on a crappy TV with crappy reception in the recovery room the day after my second son was born. It was probably a fitting time to see the movie but with all that was going on – and the crap reception – I can’t really say that I gave it a fair shake. I know it’s hip not to like it but I can’t say that I honestly don’t. I just haven’t properly seen it yet. But I’m giving it the benefit of the doubt because I HATED Mallrats when I first saw it but years later I saw it again, and then I saw it again but with the DVD commentary and I LOVE this movie now. So yeah, I’m a fanboy. Kev can do no wrong. Sue me.
