Talking ‘Bout my Baby – A Musical History

March 31st, 2008

Happy Birthday Carla!

Today is my wife’s birthday and I thought that I would take you on a little musical tour through some songs that will always remind me of her.

The beginning is as good a place to start as any, so let’s go there.

I met Carla during a trip to the Florentine Gardens to go see the Trashcan Sinatras. I’m not sure what came of the band after that day but what I did know was that I’d found a new friend.

Of course they’re here. For the rest of my life whenever I think of one, I’ll think of the other.

I know this song seems kind of strange but I will always remember the afternoon spent helping her put contact paper down on the shelves in her apartment. We were listening to one of KROQ’s many countdowns and this song came on and she began doing this little dance that included a part sort of punctuated the “Baby” in the song and it just cracked me up and made me adore her all the much more cause it was so cute.

In a move she later went on to regret, Carla once told me a story that ended with the somewhat surreal image of her standing on a cafeteria table in her school, singing this song at the top of her lungs. It makes me laugh everytime I think about it. Every. Time.

The pair of these songs sort of sum up the struggles that we had when we first tried dating. They remind me of that time largely due to the fact that Carla asked me to seek them out and hear them so I could see where she was at. Luckily we got past those times — and they’re still awesome songs.

If there was a song that defined my wife, I’m not sure what it would sound like — but I think this is pretty close to it.

And we end with:

Our song – our first dance as a married couple – and every lyric still rings as true for me as it did on that day in April.

I want you always in my heart, you are everything.

I love you Carla. Happy Birthday!

FQotD: Lightning Round – Too Close to Home?

March 28th, 2008

The Ruler is saying “You Rock!” to the rock and the Rock is saying “You Rule” to the ruler. Funny. I like funny.

This week we turn the tables on you loyal reader, it’s your turn in… The Lightning Round! Leave your answers in the comments!

1. Were you an honor roll student in school?

2. Do you collect anything?

3. Have you ever been camping?

4. What is one thing that annoys you?

5. What do you call those little plastic things on the ends of shoelaces?

6. Who’s the black private dick that gets all the chicks?

7. Have you ever gone skinny dipping?

8. Would you give me $5?

9. What’s your name spelled backwards?

10. Who is your longest friend and how long? (Ed. Note: This is how the question was worded when I found it online. I’m sure this could be taken a few different ways, but for the sake of this blog, let’s just go with penis size length of time you’ve known this person.)

Zombie Loves Pukey: A Sitcom

March 27th, 2008

Alright so no one took me up on my suggestion of writing something about that picture Jon put up yesterday so I guess I have to.

“Zombie Loves Pukey”

We fade in on a side room at the local VFW where it looks like good times are about to be had. Orange Pants Suit lady is tidying up around the desk…

OPSL: Let’s see, Jim Beam, Southern Comfort, Popov, Seven-Up for my Seven and Sev-… where’s the Seagram’s? I have to have the Seagram’s!

enter Zombie

Zombie: Braaaaiiinnnnssss….

[applause]

OPSL: Oh, there you are. Can you do me a favor and help me find my Seagram’s? People are going to start arriving for this party and I have to make sure I have a drink before then. I’m so nervous.

Zombie: Braaaiinnsssss…

OPSL: Yes, I know people will probably be fashionably late but all that means is that I get to have two drinks before everyone gets here. Now stop complaining and start looking!

Zombie: grumble grumble braaaainnnssss grumble grumble

Zombie looks around the room and finds something under the bed

Zombie: Braiinnnss?

OPSL: Zombie. That’s a can of beer. We’re looking for a bottle. A. Bottle.

Enter Pukey holding an empty Seagram’s bottle

[canned laughter and applause]

Pukey: Hey! Wheresh the party at? Woooo! *burp*

OPSL: That had better not be my Seagram’s lady! I was about to get my swerve on!

Zombie: …braaaainnnsss…?

OPSL: Oh shut up! I can too use that word!

Pukey: Keep your pants on shister, I got another bottle right here.

Pukey starts to look green

Pukey: But first I’m gonna sit down here… and you might want to pass me that trash can… ugh…

Zombie: B..ugh…raaaaiinnnnssss…

OPSL: Yeah, I don’t want to look either.

Pukey stares down into the trash can… waiting…

Pukey: Oh, man, that’s the last time I drink that stuff… Give me a beer.

OPSL passes Pukey a beer and gives her a look of sadness and dissapointment.

OPSL: Uh-huh. That’s what you said at the last party — where, I would like to remind you, you also said that you would never wear that awful pink skirt with hose that are far too tight but it doesn’t look like that promise lasted either.

Zombie: Braaaaainnnnsss!

OPSL: So why is it ok for you to say “Oh Snap!” and I can’t get my swerve on?

[canned laughter]

Zombie: ….braaaaainnnnssss…

OPSL: Oh. Well, I hadn’t thought of that.

[canned laughter]

Pukey: Hey, who just came into the room and what is he holding? Is that a cam- ulp…blarrrgghh!

There’s a flash — we freeze frame and fade into commercial.

So who came into the room? And why is he holding a camera? Let me know in the comments!

Blockbuster Shuffle – Cast Your Vote!

March 25th, 2008

Vote early and vote often…

As you might have guessed, there’s a lot of things that change when you have kids. One of the big ones and hardest to get over is the inabilty to do whatever you want, whenever you want. Simple things like just going to an afternoon movie now have to be planned out in advance — and hopefully you can find a sitter to watch the younglings (unless you’re taking them, which is another adventure unto itself).

While I wouldn’t trade the times I’ve had and will have with the kids for anything in the world, I have to admit, I miss going to the theater. So in an attempt to get caught up with the current (or not so current as you will see) movies that have graced the silver screen in recent years, we’ve joined the Blockbuster DVD rental service. We’ve made our queue and we get movies sent to us as soon as we send back the ones that we have.

Small problem though. We aren’t as dedicated to watching the movies as we should be and so we’re pretty much throwing away money. Well, the missus don’t play that but I am loathe to give up the rentals so I’m gonna shake things up by doing a couple of things.

First: We’re going to have a movie night. We have to be committed to it otherwise, we’re back to where we started (about a paragraph ago if you haven’t been paying attention). Side note – we’ve also committed to Wednesday night Gym night so wish us luck with that. I’m tired of weighing as much as a small pony.

Second: I’m going to start reviewing these movies here for my Theater Tuesday posts so: If I don’t watch the movie, I can’t review it. If I can’t review it, I can’t post. If I can’t post, I’ll break the streak. If I break the streak, Jon will hurt me.

Third: I’m leaving the movie that I see up to you. I’ve given you three choices this week but after this week I’m going to need your help in selecting a movie to rent. Also, no p*rn titles please (Mabel, I’m looking at you) cause Blockbuster doesn’t rent them and… well, really, that’s it. Otherwise, we’d have a whole other blog going – and you’d get carded at the door.

So help me out here loyal readers, my fate is in your hands.

This week’s choices:

Once - I heard it was good, so I picked it up. It’s been languishing with us for over a month.

TMNT – Yes, that’s right. The Teenage Mutant Turtles. We got it for the boys… well, Ben mostly. Aaron could care less. Funny thing is, Ben could care less too. Also have had this one for about a month.

Zodiac – This one is actually a bit newer as we finally watched “Stardust” before this one (and we had that one for over a month as well). I know it’s David Fincher and I love David Fincher but for some reason… I’ve not been able to pull myself to it.

So there it is. Cast your votes in the comments and you’ll have your review in two weeks’ time.
