Blu-ray Blues

September 23rd, 2008

So my wife surprised me the other day while we’re walking through Target.

“Did you hear about Jon and that tranny midget? And what’s with that goat?”

Wait, what’s today’s theme? Theater Tuesday? Ah. Thought it was Tranny Tuesday. My bad.

Let me jump to the other surprise.

“I know this is going to sound bad but, I think we should get Iron Man on Blu-ray.”

I smiled a little on the inside. I mean, in my mind, what she just mentioned to me was already a forgone conclusion. I had all but pre-ordered it from Amazon. But since she is generally the one who has to pull me back from the gadget love abyss I tend to fall into from time to time, this was interesting to say the least.

“Oh? And why’s that?”

“Cause I think it would be worth it and I really liked it when we saw it in the theater and it would look awesome on Blu-ray.”

My inside smile was getting bigger. You see, just prior to seeing a movie in the Blu-ray format (High Definition DVD is essentally what Blu-ray is. Remember when you first saw a DVD and compared it to a VHS tape? Well, Blu-ray is to DVD what DVD was to VHS.) my wife was not really on board with the whole HD thing. All she knew was that this would eventually cost us money.

“I know you. I know how you are. How many DVD’s are we going to have to re-buy because you want them on Blu-ray?”

I hadn’t mentioned one yet. I knew there were a couple that I wanted to get off hand. I wanted the Pixar stuff — Cars and Ratatouille. That way I could drool over the picture and the boys could watch with me. There were others as well, but I had to wait. Considering the amount of money that we just spent on the TV, I wasn’t about to start in on anything else. Pick and choose your battles my brethren. It’s the only way to win the war…

Luckily I wouldn’t have to wait long for our first taste. My brother Dave, who was so generous as to actually give us the PS3 in which our Blu-ray player resides, bought us our first disc as well — Pixar’s Cars.

And of course, it looked amazing.

I called Carla over and she begrudgingly came — probably not expecting much. Maybe just a bigger picture.

Turns out, she was impressed.

Back in Target, my wife went on, almost at length, extolling the virtues of Blu-ray (I’ll go ahead and say it, I was a little aroused) but drew the line at certain movies.

“300, even though I’ve never seen it, probably looks great! But why would anyone want to get Fool’s Gold on Blu-ray?”

I tried to explain to her that some people might want to have these movies in the best possible format because they simply liked the movie but she wasn’t having any of it. Besides, she was on a roll.

“Transformers? Yes! That would look amazing on Blu-ray! The Bucket List? Who cares?! It’s just people!”

Part of me thinks that she was just letting me know how she felt about it because she honestly doesn’t understand why people would do such a thing (she also doesn’t understand why people watch movies more than once or read books more than a couple of times — I do both. Frequently.).

Another part of me was thinking that it was a defense mechanism to try and make me see her side and that I didn’t need every movie I wanted on Blu-ray. Or that the reveal of her previously hidden semi-crush on the Blu-ray doesn’t make it ok for me to go out on a spending spree.

Maybe it was a little of both — but I didn’t care. She met me halfway into my geek realm and I was pleased as punch. As we walked through the rest of the store, I think I held her hand a little tighter.

So, it looks like we’ll be getting Iron Man on the 30th.

And I bet it will look fantastic.

Can’t really think of anything movie related to write about, but here is a picture of a stuffed lion that is pretty sweet…

The Force is strong with this one…

September 2nd, 2008

Unable to think of something to write today, i opened the DVD cabinet, closed my eyes and asked Mia to bring me a movie and that would be the topic for today.

And what did she bring…

It was then i realized i must be doing something right as a parent. (choking up) No, i …i think i must have just gotten something in my eye…

Of course, this was followed by a fifteen minute stern lecture on why this was easily the worst film of the two trilogies and that if her mother or i ever caught her laughing at Jar-Jar Binks she would be written out of the will.
