Guess the song: 10 years ago

August 4th, 2008

Since Jon’s fixin’ to embarrass me with writing that I haven’t seen in a dog’s age, I figured I would make this GTS edition match that time frame. So here’s songs from ‘97 through ‘99. See how you do. No cheating!

1. But I know I’m on a losing streak, ‘Cause I passed down my old street. And if you wanna show, then just let me know, And I’ll sing in your ear again.

2. What is this space left to fill? A bullseye forever. What is this space left to fill? A bullseye, A nail on the head. (Carla)

3. Whatever the notions, we laced in our prayers, The man upstairs is used to all of this noise, I’m through with screaming.

4. So as I take my time and realign, I wonder what it is I hope to find. I don’t mean to brag I don’t mean to boast, But I’m intercontinental when I eat french toast. (Mark)

5. This is my forty-fifth depressing tune. They’re looking for money as they clean my artistic womb. And when I give birth to the child I must take to flight, ‘Cause the black in our pocket won’t let us fight a proper fight.

6. Help come when you need it most, Im cured by laughter. Mood swings not sure I can cope, My life’s in plaster (Im past her).

7. Well, he gave her a dimestore watch, And a ring made from a spoon. Everyone is looking for someone to blame, But you share my bed, you share my name.

8. I thought I could organize freedom, How Scandinavian of me. (Jess)

9. I get a clean shave, bathe, go to a rave, Die from an overdose and dig myself up out of my grave. My middle finger won’t go down, how do I wave? And this is how I’m supposed to teach kids how to behave?

10. Toy-like people make me boy-like, Toy-like people make me boy-like. They’re invisible, when the trip it flips, They get physical, way below my lips.

As always, thanks to Apropos of Something

Guess the Song: 1990

July 21st, 2008

Alright, you guys did pretty good last time (P.S. #1 – I Remember California by R.E.M. & #10 – Hawkmoon 269 by U2) but I’m going to try and isolate the songs even further. Instead of a whole decade at once, we’re going to do the 90’s year by year. First up – 1990 (How convenient!). I’ll hit shuffle on the ‘pod, get lyrics from the first ten songs I hear and post them. You tell me what songs they come from and you’ll get it all – fame, fortune, and glory* — But NO CHEATING! There’s no fun in cheating and are you a Mr./Mrs. No-Fun-Pants? I didn’t think so!

On to the songs!

1. It makes no difference if you’re black or white, If you’re a boy or a girl. If the music’s pumping it will give you new life, You’re a superstar, yes, that’s what you are, you know it. (Jess)

2. Action speaks louder than words, And I’m a man of great experience. I know you’ve got another man, But I can love you better than him. (Jess)

3. As the rhythm designed to bounce, What counts is that the rhymes, Designed to fill your mind. Now that you’ve realized the prides arrived, We got to pump the stuff to make us tough.

4. Even old New York was once New Amsterdam, Why they changed it I can’t say People just liked it better that way. (Carla)

5. You ever heard the story of Mr. Faded Glory? Say he who rides a pony must someday fall. (Jon)

6. so let me hold it up, just one more go. holding it up for just once more. one more time to fill it up, one more time to kill.

7. it’s that little souvenir of a terrible year, which makes my eyes feel sore. oh I never should have said, the books that you read, were all I loved you for. (Jon)

8. You can’t ignore or hide away, Can’t escape from the things that line our way.
Take it, leave it, or break it, Anyway, you can’t get back to yesterday.

9. Now I sit with different faces, In rented rooms and foreign places. All the people I was kissing, Some are here and some are missing, In the nineteen-nineties.

10. All I wanted to, Was to be with you. Live inside your head, And to kill you dead.

Thanks again to Apropos of Something

*No you won’t.

Guess the Song: 80’s Edition

July 7th, 2008

Me fail English? That’s unpossible!

Ok, so using iTunes’ neat “Smart Playlist” feature, I’ve created a playlist of songs that were all released between the years of 1980-1989. The next step is, I hit shuffle and I will grab a lyric from the first 10 songs I hear and will place them here. It’s your job to tell me what song the lyric goes to. NO CHEATING! Anyone can use Google — but Google is for quitters and are you a quitter? I didn’t think so.

On to the songs!

Please Note: While I do have an affinity to those songs during the 80’s that were regarded as “New Wave”, not all of the songs in my playlist would be considered as such. Case in point, Led Zeppelin’s last album was released in 1982.

1. I remember redwood trees, bumper cars and wolverines. The ocean’s Trident submarines. Lemons, limes and tangerines, I remember this

2. At night, the people come and go, They talk too fast, and walk too slow. Chasing time from hour to hour, I pour the drinks and crush the flowers. (Carla)

3. You’re hiding from feelings, searching for more, Sharing and hoping, untouched for so long. Our lives still change from the way that we were, And now I’ll tell you something I think you should know. (Matt)

4. Her boots stomp and clomp to my door, The boots that cowboys wear. She’s got sticky little tangles In her big yellow hair. (Jon)

5. These boots were made for walking, the Marquis De Sade never made no boots like these. (Matt)

6. Hide on the promenade, Etch a postcard : How I dearly wish I was not here. (Matt, Mabel)

7. In between, What I find is pleasing and I’m feeling fine. Love is so confusing there’s no peace of mind. (Matt)

8. These people round here wear beaten down eyes, Sunk in smoke dried faces they’re so resigned to what their fate is, But not us, no not us we are far too young and clever. (Carla)

9. You know I even think that she smiled like you, She used to just stand there and smile. And her eyes would go all sort of far away, And stay like that for quite a while. (Carla, Mabel)

10. Like powder needs a spark, Like lies need the dark, I need your love. (Benjamin)

Leave your guesses in the comments and as the correct answers come through, I’ll note them here. Good Luck!

This idea is stolen from inspired by Jess over at Apropos of Something, a fantastically funny blog which you should go read now after you’re done here.
